If you’re installing polycarbonate roofing sheets, one of the most common questions is:
- Why do I need to tape polycarbonate sheets?
- Which way round do I tape polycarbonate sheets?
Applying the correct tape is an essential part of installing 10mm polycarbonate sheets, 16mm polycarbonate sheets, and other multiwall polycarbonate roofing sheets. Using the correct tapes helps protect your roof, extend the life of your sheets, and maintain their appearance.
Why Do Polycarbonate Roofing Sheets Need Taping?
Multiwall polycarbonate roofing sheets have hollow internal flutes (channels). If these are left open, dirt, dust, insects, moisture and algae can enter the sheets, causing them to become dirty or discoloured over time.
Using the correct tape seals the ends of the sheets while still allowing condensation to drain away naturally.
Correctly taped 10mm polycarbonate sheets and 16mm polycarbonate sheets will stay cleaner, perform better, and last much longer.
Which Tape Goes Where?
The tape you use depends on whether the end of the sheet is at the top or the bottom of the roof.
Top End (Highest Point of the Roof)
At the top end, use Aluminium Foil Tape to create a complete seal. This prevents dust, insects and moisture from entering the flutes.

Bottom End (Lowest Point of the Roof)
At the lower end, use Breather Tape. This special filter tape keeps insects and dirt out while allowing condensation inside the sheet to escape.
Remember do not overseal the sheet closures as you need air to circulate around teh tape to evaporate any moisture.

Which Way Round Do Polycarbonate Sheets Go?
When fitting polycarbonate roofing sheets, the UV-protected side must always face upwards towards the sun. This side is normally identified by the printed protective film supplied by the manufacturer.
Once you’ve positioned the sheet correctly:
- Apply Aluminium Tape to the top end of the sheet.
- Apply Breather Tape to the bottom end of the sheet.
- If you are fitting the sheets very flat it is sometimes beneficial to apply breather tape at both ends of the sheet to encourage good air flow
- Fit your end closure or glazing bar as recommended.
