Case Study: Magnetic Secondary Glazing Transforms a Cold, Draughty North-Facing Dining Room

A traditional wooden window with magnetic secondary glazing stopping condensation

The Problem

The Knappers’ dining room was cold, draughty and uncomfortable, especially during winter. Because the window is north facing, it suffered from heavy morning condensation and allowed significant heat loss. With several rooms still to insulate, they needed a low-cost, DIY-friendly secondary glazing solution that would improve warmth without replacing the existing windows.

The Solution: 4mm Polycarbonate Magnetic Secondary Glazing

To address the problem, they chose 4mm UV-protected, clear polycarbonate sheets, supplied pre-cut to size by Omega Build. These were installed using our white-backed magnetic and steel tape system, creating a clean, secure and removable secondary glazing panel.

This type of magnetic secondary glazing offers an ideal combination of:

  • Effective insulation for cold and draughty rooms

  • A lightweight, easy-to-handle panel

  • A removable design for cleaning and decorating

  • Lower cost compared to full window replacement

Omega Build provided guidance on how to measure correctly, ensuring a perfect fit for every panel.

Simple DIY Installation

The magnetic and steel tapes are supplied in rolls and can be cut easily with heavy-duty scissors.
To make the installation even easier, the kit included alcohol wipes for cleaning the window frames before applying the adhesive tape.

The Knappers completed the installation themselves with no specialist tools, and were impressed with how quickly the panels went into place.

Results: Warmer Room & Reduced Condensation

After fitting the magnetic secondary glazing, the dining room became noticeably warmer and free of morning condensation. The panel forms an airtight seal, reducing draughts and improving energy efficiency.

They also appreciate that the panel can be removed effortlessly for cleaning, decorating or ventilation when needed.
