DIY Secondary Glazing

Omega supplies  a range of low cost solutions for secondary glazing. They are also ideal for  listed  and older buildings where you want to retain the traditional glazing.  We can either supply made to measure opening units that remain in place all year round or  a lower  cost fixed secondary glazing kit.
We supply a budget range of film kits for secondary glazing windows. They are ideal if you have a  limited budget and are looking for a short term insulation solution. It is very simple to use requiring only a sharp knife and hairdryer to install. A double sided adhesive tape is placed around the window to be glazed and the special film supplied is stuck firmly to this. With the help of a normal hairdryer the wrinkles in the film are heated out to leave a tight skin of film over the window frame. For more information on sizes and if you want to place an order please go to our online secondary glazing shop.
                                             Fixed Secondary Glazing Kits

The kit consists of either glass clear acrylic or plate polycarbonate held in place  either by upvc fixing strips, easyfix flexible edging or magnetic tape. The glazing can be removed for cleaning when required . We will cut the acrylic or plate polycarboante to size for you free of charge. You just need to select the stock sheets you require in our online shop and put the sizes you want them cut to in the Notes section in the shopping cart (after your credit card details) . If you would like to place an order please go to our online shop

Fixed Fitting Options

The OM24 UPVC glazing strip can fit glazing materials from 2mm -4mm as secondary glazing to an existing window frame.  It consists of 2 pieces 1.83M long of white Upvc which clip into each other. The base strip has double sided adhesive tape so it can be fixed to either metal or wooden frames securely. For larger wooden windows it is recommended that the strip is screw fixed. The “snap in “cap makes installation both quick and easy.  Once fitted it looks like a  white picture frame around the glazing panel.

The OM25 Magnetic glazing strip can also be used to fix 2-4mm material to an existing window frame. The kit consists of a 30M long 12.7mm wide magnetic tape and a 13mm steel tape which attach onto each other. There is double sided adhesive tape to attach the tapes to the window frame and glazing material. The tapes are only 2mm thick. It is an ideal solution where you do not want the secondary glazing to protrude too much.It comes in  15 or 30 M lengths.

A very straightforward video with advice on fitting the magnetic tape can be found at
magnetic secondary glazing fitting video.

The Easyfix kit can be used for fitting 2-4mm acrylic ,plate polycarbonate or glass. You get a 15M roll of flexible edging ,72 nylon clips and wood screws ,a  mitre tool and fitting instructions. The flexible edging is used to frame the panel and it is then held in place by the nylon clips and screws. You need to ensure you allow at least 10mm around the outside of the secondary glazing panel for the clips.

As Easyfix is not reliant on adhesive it is ideal where the surface is not high gloss,is slightly uneven,or slightly damp. The kit is available in white, clear or brown.

Cutting tips

The sheets can be sawn with an electric jigsaw or a handsaw with a fine toothed blade. They can also be drilled using a slow speed power drill or hand drill. Put a small piece of adhesive tape on the sheet to prevent the drill point from skipping.

Measuring Tips

We offer a free cut to size service. Just give us the dimensions at time of order. Our saw cuts to a tolerance of +/-3mm. When considering on where to place/fit the secondary glazing panel please consider the following.

           - Any unevenness on the edges of your reveal

           - The ease of fitting and removing the panels

In the case of the above it is advisable to not place the secondary glazing tight to the outside edge of the frame.

If you are concerned about the quality of the paintwork or surface we strongly recommend you use the easyfix kit or the OM24 glazing strip with screws.

OM24 upvc glazing strip

Deduct 26mm per dimension from the external dimensions of the window frame/outside edge of where you want the secondary glazing frame to sit. It is important that there is a clean flat surface all the way round to ensure a good fit. Please ensure that all window furniture e.g. handles etc fit within the recess.

OM25 magnetic glazing tape

We need the external dimensions of where you want the secondary glazing to sit. The magnetic and steel tapes are 13mm wide so ensure there is enough space on the frame to accommodate this.

Easyfix

The clips take up 10mm on each side. Therefore deduct 20mm per dimension from the external dimensions of the window frame/outside edge of where you want the secondary glazing frame to sit.

Framed Magnetic tape

Deduct 8mm per dimension from the external dimensions of the window frame/outside edge of where you want the secondary glazing frame to sit.

The framed magnetic tape needs a flat mountable surface of 16mm around the window frame.

DIY Secondary Glazing

Some Customer Feedback

Just to let you know I've completed the secondary glazing in my front porch and am delighted with the result. I understand that for a business like yours mine was a very small order but the courtesy and helpfulness I experienced made me feel like a highly valued customer. I will have no hesitation using you again and recommending you to other DIY novices. Thanks again for all the advice and support. Feb 2011

I've used your products (4mm acrylic) to secondary glaze traditional sash and case windows because proprietary secondary glazing looked god awfull with a heavy PVC frame bolted to the window. I am delighted with the results. The outer / inner windows dont steam up. The end finish is so unobtrusive my wife has stuck a small "sticker" on each window to prevent people bumping into them because they don't notice the inner pane is there and  the draught proofing and heat retention is superb. In due course we will extend the secondary glazing to other windows in our home.  Jan 2011

Thanks for sending your newsletter – it prompts me to take the opportunity to say how pleased we have been with the secondary glazing kit you sent us a few weeks ago. It was cut to exactly the measurements we asked for and the instructions were clear and helpful. The tapes were good quality and adhered well. The result is hopefully warmer rooms from a system which is hardly noticeable. We chose Omega after an internet search and are very pleased to have found a company whose products are priced reasonably and do exactly what the website claims.   Feb 2009
